Shams is a lifestyle design company. We always look to dig deeper into the wealth of forgotten knowledge and abandoned spaces within our locale. Shams is about relentlessly searching for innovative, sustainable and accessible design in decor, events, food, flowers and gardens.
Shams began with Maha Dahmash as a small shop selling handmade pots and plants. As we expanded, Maha saw the opportunity to grow into the adjacencies of gardening and flower services, forging her name as one of Amman’s top florists.
Inspired by a passion for heritage and culture, Maha’s husband Hazem Malhas renovated the Malhas family homes in 2015, where Shams El Balad was born as a small cafe.
In late 2016, Hazem and Maha's son Qais Malhas joined Shams El Balad as Chef. Over the next few years, we grew from a small breakfast cafe into an ambitious full-service restaurant.
The restaurant's transformation was fully realized in May 2017 when we moved out of our original space and into the adjacent historical home of the Shuqeiri family. With a focus on local sourcing, seasonality and sustainability, Shams El Balad is about connecting our food heritage with our contemporary identity.
